linocut on paper

Doykeit translates to 'hereness' in Yiddish. A bundist call for diasporism over a singular homeland, to make home where we are now.

Mameloshn, April 2024

Mamelosn was an intimate pop-up dinner in Oakland intended to experiment with Yiddish language, uplift Ashkenazi foodways, and facilitate community.

While this feast integrated the Yiddish language into the dining experience, it also uplifted the non-verbal languages that we use to pass on tradition and identity including food and art. Kaya and Liv conceived of the menu, which was based on the staples of the Jewish delicatessen (pastrami, rye, pickles, bialys) through extensive conversation with their grandparents about their childhood food memories. Instead of payment, guests were invited to bring an object representing an ancestor and to come up with a question for them. After feasting, each participant spoke aloud their questions and ancestors' names. The group sat in the unanswerable questions togher for some time. Where can we go with the fragments we've inherited?

This participatory art experience dwells at the intersection of the permanent and the ephemeral. Indeed, the experience was unique and the food only lasted a short while, but the menus, tablecloth, and photos of the event endure. This tension sheds light on the very process of cultural preservation in which fragments both are lost and remain.
